An Angel Got His Wings...

My thoughts on Micheal Jackson.

Withouth MJ my childhood years wouldnt mean a thing. If there was one driving force behind growing up in the 90's, it was his music storming out of stereos everywhere. From moonwalks to shouting, every kid tried to imititate him. I still remember the day that I graduated from kindergarten. The entire class sang "We Are The World" to the parents and teachers watching. Since then, I dont think there was anything more permanent than the timeless king of pop. His acts as a humanitarian are what mean the most to me. As famous as he was, he was a very kind soul. It's like Elvis Presley once said, "What's fame and fortune, if you cant share it with your friends?" MJ shared his fortune with the world and helped those in need.

The ceremony was very touching. The media didnt tell the true story; those who were close to him did. They knew the real story about him. If there's anything more proper that could be said about his death it's, "Maybe now they will leave you alone."

I was at the DFW airport when I heard the news. All the tv screens were focused on the breaking news about Micheal Jackson's death. While on the Las Vegas strip, the video screen outside Planet Hollywood put his picture up in rememberance.

The world will never be the same without him. He is immortal. He is the king.

An angel got his wings,
And we'll hold our heads up knowing that he's fine.
We'd all be lucky to have a love like that in a lifetime

Here's to MJ:

FIESTA tiene un cachito de todo!

So a couple nights ago, the peeps (Monika, Robert, Robby Jr) and I went out to dinner and a tour of Fort Worth afterwards. Downtown is pretty incredible, btw. Earlier that day my sister mentioned that she wanted to make some enchiladas potosinas for dinner, so we made a stop at one of the local mexican grocery stores, called FIESTA. And just to make sure it was down right Mexican, outside it said, "salchichoneria, tortilleria, panaderia..." and whatever else you can add -ia to.

One of their signs had a typo that made me LMFAO!

Maxican...hahaha; Spelling FAIL.

Oh yeah and they sold a bunch of fresh herbs you normally find in a Mexicans backyard, such as maguey, aloe vera (savila), mint, kelite, and culantro??? idk that must've been another typo.

We went there to find little red corn tortillas and queso fresco to make the enchiladas. These arent your typical enchiladas, though. Theyre called enchiladas potosinas and the way you make them is by putting the queso inside the red tortilla, folding it like an enchilada but frying it a bit. Then you put sauted carrots, cabbage, and potatoes diced into little pieces on top, with a little bit of grated cheese.

They're supposed to look something like this.

Theyre mighty good. The first time I tried them was when I was 13 years old and my dad took us to Real de Catorce in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. We had them for a little stand on the street. They were super delicious. Since then that's been one of my favorite foods. I've tried to recreate them but its not the same. I actually had some last summer when I visited that same place in Mexico, and they were gooood. We're making some for dinner today. I hope theyre just as yummy!

I Sold My Soul To The Open Road

Dudeeeeeeeeee. I think I'm gonna love DFW. Monday morning, Rey, Fidel and I took off from the RGV to embark on a roadtrip to Dallas/Arlington. We made it to San Antonio in about 3 1/2 hrs, made a stop at Hooters in Selma, and then headed off again. Got into Dallas around 6:3opm due to the heavy traffic that started outside of San Antonio and didnt end til we were near the DFW area. Had reservations at the Hyatt Regency downtown, so I stayed there one night and hung around down town. Tuesday we spent the entire day at the Ballpark at Arlington and then headed to my destination in Fort Worth.

View of downtown Dallas from our hotel room on the 21st floor of the Hyatt Regency.

The Ballpark at Arlington.

The new Cowboys Stadium is pretty legittt.

Lower level behind home plate.

I think I'm gonna go to a few Ranger games this season, as well as some shows in Dallas, so this summer should be fun, guaranteed. It's so quiet around here and very peaceful during the day, which is just what I needed. I have no clue when I'll go back to Edinburg, but I don't really want to. We'll just have to see how well these next few months go. What's everyone else doing this summer?

Holdin' It Down For The Underground

It's kinda crazy that lately this is the only thing I've been listening to. It's a pretty epic album, but more than that, I really connect with everything it says. If these current moments of my life were put in a movie, there's no doubt that Homesick would be the soundtrack.

I've been having a lot of mixed feelings about leaving to Fort Worth. These types of decisions are normally easier for me because I usually don't spend too much time away from home. However this is different and I'm pretty much uprooting to a new place. I'm sad about leaving, but also glad to get away. It's been an emotional rollercoaster thus far.

I wish we could hang like we did back then but that's pretty impossible now. We're all grown up and life's pulled us apart. I miss you my friend.

Starts With One

There's a few things that I don't understand completely so I must ask questions.
Seriously, what is the point of religion? I know its a guide to morality, but what's the point of gathering or conforming to such central ideas? If you know me, you know I'm a good person for the most part, but have totally different beliefs, especially when it comes to faith and religion. That's not to say I don't believe in God, because I totally do. But this whole attachment to an institution that tells you to fear god or you will burn in hell isn't my thing. Some people go as far as to say that they have a "calling", or whatever, but how? I know the explanation for it, but where's the proof? I'm a lost soul, but there's still a chance of saving me. If you can provide proof and a reasonable and NOT irrational explanation, then consider me converted. Maybe.
The other thing is, why are people afraid of being informed? Like with politics, society, and religious beliefs. Are they afraid theyre gonna flake? There's nothing wrong in coming to a realization and learning you were wrong. At least you've come to your senses and become more in touch with the world and gotten rid of that ignorance you kept carrying in your pockets. I know some people that I talk to on a regular basis dont like it when I criticize music for being corporate or talk about politics and how much of a fail this capitalist system and goverment is. Most people just say they dont care. But they should, because that's the kind of attitude that enables capitalists to run the economy to the ground. So my question again, why don't people like to learn or be informed of the things that will make them uncomfortable?
It's the year 2009 and we live in America. It's not mandatory to walk in a straight line.

How To Make The Best Of The Easter Weekend In 3 Easy Steps

1. Pick up a friend from the airport, grab some Mexican beer and rent a hotel room at the beach.

My friend Juan flew in from New Mexico this weekend, making the perfect time to runaway to the beach. Picked him up at 10am in Mcallen, and were on our way. We stopped in Port Isabel for some Wing Stop and some other necessities like a football, sand castle molds, and an ice chest to fill with Corona and Tecate. Mission accomplished.

"Oh hell yea, I wanna be a sea turtle!"

"My turn to be the seahorse now."

Tecate + limon y sal + SPI = FTW

Me and Juan relaxing under the sun clouds.

No Diving. Just Drinking.

Upon leaving or entering, always take a photo with the classic sign
.

2. Have a little bit of bbq and then head to a DGE show.

I got home Saturday afternoon, and just dropped my bags at the door and crashed on the couch. A few hours later I went to my brother's apt for a little bbq/celebration for my nephews b-day. After that was over, Juan and I headed over to Las Palmas Race Track in Mission to catch the Silverstein show. I was running late already but Silverstein and Bless The Fall were of more importance to me. When I got there, A Static Lullaby was on their last song, which happened to be their cover of "Toxic" by Britney Spears. Bless the Fall was totally awesome, and Silverstein was off the heezy fo sho. I don't think i've ever moshed, jumped and sang my lungs out this much at a show before. And get this, Juan was tying his shoe and the Silverstein drumstick fell right in front of him, so he picked it up, that lucky fck. This show was FTW, most def.

This kiddo was in town and I heart him.

BTF - FTW

Beau Bokan welcome to Mission, TX

Silverstein!

Danggg Shane, you're kinda like the mann.

3. Have a gathering of sorts with plenty of food and plenty of easter eggs.

Easter is always fun when you have lots of easter eggs and family and friends around. What's not fun though, is the mess left afterwards. We had a family get together at Memorial Park in Edinburg and cooked plenty of food. I'm not into bbq that much so I usually just have potato salad, rice and pico de gallo w/ tortilla chips.

Conditions for an Easter egg war were perfect. When you have sunny skies in the evening and boat loads of easter eggs, you know its gonna go down. The number one rule in easter egg warfare is to always have an adequate supply of easter eggs for your arsenal and never get caught off guard. Those are the worse. Sure enough, it got durrtayy. We all know mexicans always have put flour in their easter eggs to get someone good. No mames guey, there were cartons upon cartons of these nukes and everyone was covered in harina. That's not it though, after those finished, some personal battles broke out and they started loading their easter eggs with whatever food they could find. Beans, pico de gallo, rice, cake frosting, baby formula, and melted chocolate candies all found their way into egg shells. If you think thats hardcore, the matches escalated with real eggs! Whoah nelly! Hardcore egg fights broke out. Luckily I was not involved in any of that, so I was almost as clean as a button. Crazyyyy day.

Christian and J.T. on the offensive

Oh snap!

So this was my weekend folks. Relaxation at the beach, hardcoreness at a show, and feast and frenzy with family on Easter. It was totally good, how was yours?

Discover The Unseen

Every War Has A Chance.

I was super nervous this morning when I went to class because I had to do my presentation today. My topic was Invisible Children. It's a non-profit organization dedicated to stop the child soldier crisis in northern Uganda. I totally nailed it though, initiated class discussion and my nervousness quickly went away. It was only supposed to be about 10 mins long but went on for more than that. I feel proud of myself, because people we're really interested in it. I encourage you to visit www.invisiblechildren.com to find out more, and watch the documentary Invisible Children: Rough Cut, that started this whole movement.

Also on a side note, this is something that's really important to me. I feel like I have a connection with the world through music, politics, science, and philosophy. I always have my head stuck in those things, and if ever I can make a difference through awareness, I'll be glad to. There's a lot more happening in the world than what you see on CNN.

I have no iPod today and it's killing me! Turns out it's been running since the last two days when I took the headphones off, i forgot to turn it off and lock it. I'm gonna be totally bored for the rest of the day until I get home. I was gonna use it to calm me down before my presentation, but I didnt have it, so I had to dish it out. Thankfully, everything turned out fine.

Gonna get some Vitamin Water, because I've been craving one. I dont know what to eat.

P.S.
There's no classes Thursday, so that makes me a lucky dawg. I have the rest of the week off starting after my next class. Fuck yesss
